25 Ways to Motivate Yourself

Post image for 25 Ways to Motivate Yourself

Here are 25 ways to motivate yourself to get through the most dreadful jobs. I have used these many times. Whether you need motivation at work, motivation to lose weight, or just to finish your taxes, they really do work. They have been distilled from several sources over the past ten years or so, including Tony Robbins, Steven Covey, and the Leadership Center at Washington State University.

1. Make a Plan. Putting pen to paper is the fastest way to clarify your thoughts and feelings.

2. Begin with your goals. Write each one down and why each goal is important to you.

3. List each task required to obtain that goal. Be specific and brief. Use point form.

4. Number your tasks in the order they should be accomplished.

5. Put a star beside each task that represents a milestone towards completing your plan and accomplishing your goal.

6. Plan to reward yourself when you reach each milestone.

7. Use your pain. Pain is a powerfull motivator. Remind yourself of the consequences should you not obtain your goal.

8. Be realistic in what you can accomplish. Do not set goals you do not believe are attainable.

9. Budget your time for each task.

10. Give yourself a deadline for each task.

11. Be honest with yourself. Reminder yourself of the difference between a task you can’t do and a task you don’t want to do.

12. Anticipate the roadblocks you are likely to encounter along the path ahead.

13. Don’t rationalize inactivity.

14. Use rewards to motivate yourself to get through the difficult tasks.

15. Be optimistic. Statistically, optimists have a greater chance of success, so put the statistics on your side.

16. Lighten up. Remember too smile. Take any opportunity to laugh. Especially try to laugh at yourself.

17. Humans generally make mistakes. If you are a human, keep in mind mistakes may happen to you.

18. Recognize potential conflicts and make a decision what to do. Stick with your decision.

19. Do your research. Read anything relating to your situation. Go to the bookstore and find a book about someone who has been in your situation.

20. Remind yourself. Daily, or even hourly if needed. Put notes where you will see them. Tie a string on your finger. Send yourself an email at night, so you’ll see it first thing in the morning.

21. Make the time. If time is an issue, get up an hour earlier if needed. The rest of your day will be brighter with tasks already completed. Don’t leave important tasks to the end of the day when you are more likely to be tired and less motivated to work on them.

22. Leverage success by using that stimulation to do some extra work.

23. Start now. Write down your goals immediately. Complete one task before leaving your desk.

24. Seriously: start now.

25. Why haven’t you started yet?

On a day when I don’t want to think about any of this stuff, you’ve made me think about it. And I thank you for that. Because this isn’t just a plan to motivate, sometimes it’s a plan to survive one more day. And you know what? It’s a very good plan.

Thank you.
